About Us
Alletta Morris McBean was a descendent of one of the signers of the United States constitution, and her family had a history in Providence and Newport, Rhode Island, for many generations. Additionally, she was one of the original forces in the creation of the Preservation Society of Newport County. She left her family home Chepstow, built in 1860, to the Society to be added to their list of famous properties available to the public as living museums.
Since its inception in 1986, the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust has been instrumental in the preservation of many historically significant buildings in Newport and conservation of open space on Aquidneck Island. In recent years, numerous improvements have been made to the Newport Hospital by the Trust, and assistance has been granted to nonprofit organizations serving the residents of Newport County. A total of over $75 million in grants have been made so far.
